It’s probably one of the most Googled words – ‘happiness’, along with ‘Kim Kardashian’. Those of us who want more are trying to find it, those of us who have it are trying to find ways of hanging on to it and those who have absolutely none whatsoever are looking for ‘the answer’.
It’s one of the most fundamentally important things to us as human beings. Along with our health, and sometimes without one, we don’t have the other.
Why would it be any different in the corporate world?
The truth is, there is no golden secret to happiness. It depends on so many factors but usually when we feel good about ourselves, loved, valued and rewarded, life is ok. We can cope with the other stuff thrown at us and life does throw a lot of stuff at us nowadays.
It is no different in the corporate world.
How do we know?
Well, we’re not a bunch of hippies wearing tie-dye, kicking back listening to Santana with ‘Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke’ playing on a loop in the background …we just know.
We’ve been doing this sort of thing for a long time. Fifteen years to be exact and we know that probably the biggest change any company can make to become more successful, to grow profit significantly and become not just a well known brand but a DAM good brand is to build a DAM good team.
A fantastic one actually, and just as importantly, to hold on to them.
It’s like a relationship. If you treat someone badly, ignore them, demand too much, talk at them all the time, cover your ears when they’re talking and take take take, they will go go go. They won’t look back, they won’t care and you will be a sad sorry soul on your own, staring at your shoes or Googling ‘happiness’ for the answer.
If you treat someone well, listen, care, support, help them to grow as people and professionals, strengthen their backbone and be there if it all goes a bit pear shaped, they will reward you with loyalty and love.
It really, really, is no different in the corporate world.
