Interview With’s Head of HR Kathy Allison

 Kathy Allison is one of the brightest young companies in the UK at the moment. The up-and-coming Manchester-based online retailer’s Head of HR Kathy Allison took the time to speak to DAM about her company, about looking after employees and about’s relationship with DAM.


What made you want to work for 

Kathy Allison: When I came for my interview I loved the people I met. I got a real sense that this was a very different and special place! I also loved the idea of being able to establish the HR team and department from scratch.


Has working with met your expectations?

Kathy Allison: It has completely exceeded them! We’ve grown the business so quickly and it has been an amazing experience to be part of the success story. Growing the HR team and seeing so many fantastic people come into the business has also been a great experience.


How important do you think it is for a company to look after its employees?

Kathy Allison: It’s hard to answer this question without sounding clichéd, but it is incredibly important. Without a happy team you can’t grow like we have done, but it’s not just a business decision. Here at Boohoo the desire to ‘do the right thing’ for our people comes right from the top and flows through our culture and values.


In what ways does take care of its people?

Kathy Allison: We live and breathe our values of Passion, Agility, Creativity and Team, and we are very protective of maintaining our culture as we grow as it’s so important to provide the right environment for people to flourish in.

It’s key to us to offer the right benefits package too. We have different benefits packages for different levels but they include: pension, private health, health cash plans, life assurance, childcare vouchers, employee discount. We also do some fun stuff too – we have a great space that we use once a month for our Friday pizza and drinks after work, throw some great parties and our favourite at Christmas is the Departmental Christmas Decorations competition which gets highly competitive! Communication is also important to us so we hold some great events where we share our plans with all the teams. This year we had a fantastic event with around 300 of the team, and finished with a fashion show starring members of each team and some amazing dancers.


What made want to work with DAM? 

Kathy Allison: We liked the personal feel with DAM.  Although we’re an online business, our culture is built on relationships and working closely with DAM has given everyone the chance to ask lots of questions, get to know their team and get a very personalised service.


How has’s relationship with DAM allowed it to look after its employees?

Kathy Allison: It has given us access to experts who work with us very flexibly and help us to promote understanding of what the company offers in terms of benefits. This maximises take up and helps people get the most from their benefits package. Extra services like mortgage advice are also great.


If you had one line to convince someone to work for, what would you say?

Kathy Allison: There is nowhere else like it!


What lies ahead for in the near future?

Kathy Allison: More growth, continued international expansion and lots more exciting opportunities for everyone in the team!
